Thyroid ultrasound uses sound waves to create detailed images of your thyroid, without the need for radiation. It’s a gentle, comfortable option that’s often used when ongoing monitoring or quick, real-time views are needed.
Lab tests measure hormone levels but don’t show what your thyroid looks like. A thyroid ultrasound provides a visual assessment of nodules, swelling, or structural issues.
Most exams take about 15–30 minutes, and there’s no downtime—you can go back to your day immediately after.
In most cases, a referral is required if the ultrasound is for diagnostic purposes.

During a thyroid ultrasound, you will lie on an exam table while a technician applies a warm gel to your skin. A handheld device called a transducer moves over your neck, using sound waves to create detailed images. The procedure is quick, painless, and radiation-free, and you can resume normal activities immediately after. A radiologist will review the images, and your doctor will discuss the results with you.
If a thyroid nodule or other area of concern is detected, your ultrasound may include an AI-powered review, or Ultrasound+, to give your radiologist additional insight. Your radiologist will provide a detailed report to your provider. If further evaluation is needed, SimonMed offers comprehensive follow-up options, including biopsy services.
