Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves—never radiation—to create live, real-time 3D images of your body’s internal structures. When these images are captured over time to show motion, it’s known as 4D ultrasound. This safe, painless exam helps your doctor evaluate organs, tissues, and blood flow and is commonly used for pregnancy, vascular, abdominal, and soft-tissue evaluations. A technologist gently moves a handheld transducer across the skin with warm gel to capture the images, and most exams take just 15–30 minutes.

Preparation depends on the type of exam. Some ultrasounds may require fasting or drinking water before your appointment, while others need no preparation at all. Your care team will provide detailed instructions when you schedule your exam.

After your exam, a radiologist reviews the images and sends a detailed report to your referring doctor, who will discuss the results and next steps with you.
